Shiner St. Paul teams sweep state track & field meet

WACO - For the second straight year, Shiner St. Paul swept the competition at the TAPPS 2A state meet after winning the girls and boys team titles at Baylor's Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium on Saturday.

The Lady Cardinals now have four state titles in program history. They won previously in 2011, 2013 and 2015.

The girls finished with 152 points ahead of Canterbury Episcopal's 77, while the boys finished with 84 points over Tomball Rosehill Christian's 72.


The Hallettsville Sacred Heart boys finished eighth with 42 points.

The Indianettes finished ninth with 27.5 points, and Faith Academy was 10th with 26 points.

In 4A, St. Joseph's boys team finished tied for fourth with Grapevine Faith Christian with 53 points, while the girls finished tied for sixth plce with Covenant Christian with 35.

The Flyers' Desmon Flonnory took home the gold medal in the 200 meters and the silver in the 400. Teammate Charlie Quary finished second in the 100, while Alisa Novosad was third in the girls 100.

Faith Academy's Hope Burns won gold medals in the 2A 100- and 300-meter hurdles, and finished third in the 100.

St. Paul's Austin Barton was second in the 400, and teammate Lane Jackson took second in the 1,600 meters. Derek Kapavik finished second in the 110-meter hurdles, finished third in the 300-hurdles and was part of the 1,600-meter relay that finished first.

Sacred Heart's 800-meter relay team took first, and finished third in the 400 relay.

For the girls, St. Paul's Natalie Jackson finished second in the 800 meters. The 400-meter relay team took home silver, while Sacred Heart took bronze. St. Paul's 800- and 1,600-meter relay teams finished second.
