Plenty at stake in regular-season finales for local football teams
It’s the final regular season games for the Shiner teams this week.
The Shiner St. Paul Cardinals are at St. Gerard tonight (Thursday, November 8, 2018 ) while the Shiner Comanches host Wallis Brazos tomorrow, ( Friday, November 9, 2018 ).
Playoffs seedings are on the line for both teams

The Cardinals wrap up at district play in San Antonio at the St. Gerard Royals tonight ( Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 7:30 pm ).
Going into today, Sacred Heart leads the district with a 2-0 record, St. Paul and Temple Central Texas Christian are both 1-1 while St. Gerard is 0-2.
The Cardinals will finish second if they beat St. Gerard and in that scenario, would host a first-round playoff game.
The Royals continue to have continuity in their program as head coach Vincent Mendez is in his fourth year in charge of the program.
“St. Gerard has been able to build their system with their coach now been there for several years,” St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “They have some decent kids that can play.”
The Royals are a run-heavy system led by a freshman running back who is fast and will get the football on pitches, power and jet sweeps.
Wachsmuth said the Royals run the ball more than St. Paul does.
For the Cardinals, not having a single turnover and proper execution will be critical.
“When we run any play on offense, all 11 guys have to execute their assignment properly,” he said.
