Shiner football teams will start the 2018 season this week with the Shiner St. Paul Cardinals going to Yorktown and the Shiner Comanches hosting Hallettsville at Comanche Stadium. Both contests will kick off tomorrow ( Friday, August 31, 2018 ) at 7:30 p.m.

The Cardinals open on the road against 2ADI program Yorktown.
The teams opened against each other in 2016 and did not get to play because of weather last year.
Cardinals head coach Jake Wachsmuth said that the Wildcats went 8-5 (3-2) and were regional semifinalists. 22 lettermen, five offensive and five defensive starters return this year.
The ‘Cats line up in a true spread system and will always be in the shotgun, sometimes with two backs.
Key offensive players will be running back Dylan Sinast, lineman Martin Munoz, lineman Cory Boehm, tight end Corey Pargmann, receiver Justin Denson and quarterback Josh Garcia.
“They will attempt to make big plays especially via the pass,” Wachsmuth said. “We will have to take big plays away from Yorktown and that will give us opportunities.”
The ‘Cats run a split and eight-man front with aggressive play at the line.
Sinast at defensive back and Pargmann on the line will play key roles on the ‘Cat defense.
In the two scrimmages, St. Paul has struggled playing its assignments on offense and that will need to get better.
“We have to execute, have no missed assignments because missing assignments caused us to miss chances to score in scrimmage. We have to get better at what we do on offense and not turn the ball over,” he said.
