FLATONIA — Once again, St. Paul got hot near the end.

The Cardinals completed their second scrimmage Friday at Flatonia, against the host Bulldogs and San Antonio Cole. The Cardinals ran 15 or so offensive plays against the other two and played defense against both also, followed by a 12-minute, live-quarter against both teams.
St. Paul got one offensive score against Flatonia in the controlled series and then scored twice in the live quarter against the Bulldogs at the end of the scrimmage.
The Cardinals and Cougars went scoreless in the controlled portion and SA Cole got two in during the live scrimmage, and kept St. Paul out of the end zone.
Overall, St. Paul scored three times and the defense gave up three scores.
“We came along at the end,” St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “We had fight in us and did not seem like we were tired at the end. I think there are things we can build off going forward.”
St. Paul first went on defense against SA Cole, keeping them out of the end zone and the Cardinal offense first faced Flatonia, scoring on a 70-yard run on the first play.
Tables were turned and St. Paul’s defense faced the Bulldog’s offense, with Flatonia scoring two touchdowns.
Against SA Cole in the live quarter, St. Paul’s offense could not get in the end zone on two possessions while Cole scored on the first and punted on the sec- ond.
Against Flatonia, St. Paul was on defense first and recovered a fumble inside the Bulldog 10, giving the offense a very short field to score on a 1-yard run. St. Paul stopped Flatonia on fourth down on the next series and then drove 60 yards in three plays, scoring on a 28-yard run.
St. Paul’s offense in the controlled series was 22 rushes for 199 yards and one touchdown, and 2-of-7 passing for 15 yards for 29 plays for 214 yards. In the live quarters. St, Paul ran 12 times for 77 yards and two scores, and hit 1-for-4 passing for 4 yards, totaling 81 yards on 16 plays.
For the entire scrimmage, the Cardinals had 276 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 34 carries and were 3-of-11 for 19 yards, totaling 295 yards on 45 plays.
