St. Paul head football coach Jake Wachsmuth was happy to see the fire and competitiveness from his team.

The Cardinals improved to 2-0 on the season as they beat nearby neighbors Flatonia 35-8 in the 2017 Homecoming game Friday night at Comanche Stadium, that was also the Cardinals’ home opener.

“I think our kids competed really well tonight,” Wachsmuth said. “We have a lot of respect for Flatonia and we were ready for the play from the get go.”

“I was very pleased with our effort. We made some little mistakes. But I thought we played with a little more fire tonight.” St. Paul was tenacious on defense as they forced four turnovers and held the Bulldogs to a little under 200 yards.

“I thought our guys on defense flew around and we hit Flatonia instead of them hitting us,” Wachsmuth said.

While only completing one pass all night, the Cardinals ran for just a hair shy of 400 yards, which is absolutely pure Cardinal offensive style. “We started the game running the football (well). We are going to have to make those pass plays but we always pride ourselves on how we run the ball,” he said.

The Cardinals opened the game with a 54-yard drive in four plays for the first score, starting with River Haynes hitting Joseph Natal for a 9-yard gain scoring on a 39-yard run at the 10:36 mark.

The Cardinals forced a three-and-out and drove 53-yards in four plays with Natal scoring on a 35-yard counter for a 14-0 lead.

St. Paul made it three scores for three offensive possessions after gaining a turnover at the Flatonia 47 as Kresta capped a four-minute ,12-play drive with a 1-yard run five seconds into the second quarter.

St. Paul failed to convert a fourth-down inside the Bulldog 15 and Flatonia had an 81- yard run Dakory Willis to set up a potential scoring threat that was ended as Haynes intercepted a pass.

St. Paul got another pick as Kai Giese killed Flatonia’s drive that opened the second half. Kresta had a 34-yard run and Haynes scored on a bootleg for a 28-0 St. Paul lead. Haynes used the same play on a 21- yard run to cap a fiveplay, 61-yard drive with 2:43 in the third.

After trading turnovers near the end of the third frame and continuing into the fourth quarter, Flatonia ended the shut out as Willis had a 4-yard run to cap a 58- yard drive with 4:06 left in the game.
