Playoff Game Preview:
Shiner St. Paul Cardinals vs. Bryan Brazos Christian Eagles
The St. Paul Cardinals meet the Bryan Brazos Christian Eagles in the TAPPS IV state semifi nals at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Woodlands Christian. This will be the Cardinals' second straight trip to the state semifinals.
St. Paul beat Beaumont Legacy Academy, 48-18, last week in the area round while the Eagles advanced with 49-0 win over Legacy Prep.
St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said Bryan Brazos Christian will be a different team than what the Cardinals just faced in Beaumont Legacy.
"It is going to be a challenge," he said. They do more things on the offensive side of the ball."
The Eagles are very multiple on offense, doing everything from power running to some spread action.
"They are very sound with techniques," Wachsmuth said.
The Eagles like to run the pitch play with their running backs a lot. Key players on offense is quarterback Jacob Jordan, receiver Tyler Chism and running back Tucker Hartis.
"We have to prevent big plays and tackle well," Wachsmuth said. "We gave a couple of big plays against Beaumont Legacy and did not tackle well at times. We have to fix those."
The Eagles run the odd front on the defensive side. Wachsmuth said they are good at swarming the football.
St. Paul offense did well on ball security with no turnovers against Beaumont Legacy. However, the Cardinals did have some breakdowns on assignments.
"Little by little, we can eliminate those mistakes," Wachsmuth said.
