Game Preview: Austin Brentwood Christian Bears at Shiner St. Paul Cardinals

The St. Paul Cardinals start district this week as they welcome TAPPS 11-man football debutant Austin Brentwood Christian.

Head coach Jake Wachsmuth said St. Paul's biggest concern is correcting the errors that helped lead to last week's 42-20 setback at Austin Hyde Park.

"We are worried about eliminating the mistakes that we have control over," he said. "It is the start of district and we are focused solely on this game."

Brentwood runs a spread offense that is pretty much run through quarterback Jordan Johnson. He has completed 33-of-60 passes for 439 yards and eight touchdowns with two interceptions. Johnson's running is how Brentwood will be a challenge for St. Paul. He has 569 yards on 49 carries and has scored five touchdowns.

Brentwood's leading receiver is Philip Mach (9-124, 1 touchdown). "When he runs, we have to prevent him from the big play," Wachsmuth said. "When he drops back, we have to pressure him and not let him get outside the pocket. We need to be aware of him at all times."

On defense, Brentwood is split or eight-man frontwith Cover 3. Sam Orick is the leading tackler with 28 total tackles.

"We have to correct penalties and take care of the ball. When we turn the ball over, we have lost. But when we have no turnovers and our defense gets a few, we usually win," Wachsmuth said.

This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
