St. Paul leads way at Shiner High meet

SHINER — Three area schools took their cross-country squads to the Shiner Meet on Saturday, with St. Paul taking first place in the varsity girls 1A-2A race and the varsity boys 1A-2A race while Waelder took third in the same boys race.

The Lady Cardinals led the pack in the 1A-2A race as all five athletes finished in the top 10. St. Paul edged out their in-town rival Shiner Lady Comanches 26 points to 52. Weimar took third with 95 points.

E. Morgan finished the race in second overall with her time of 12 minutes, 49 seconds. E. Wagner placed fourth with her time of 13:06, H. Kapavik took fifth with her time of 12:22 and B. Blair took seventh with her time of 13:23. R. Johnson finished out the top five with her time of 13:43.

Other named runners include A. Wachsmuth with her 13th place finish of 13:50 and T. Garza was timed at 14:04, good for 16th.

On the boys' side, St. Paul edged out Austin Royals 35 to 48 in points. Waelder took third with their score of 58 points.

Top Cardinals' runner was N. Wagner who placed fourth with his time of 18:34. A. Wagner took sixth with his time of 18:57. W. Jackson was right behind with his seventh-place time of 19:00. Rounding out the top five for the Cardinals were J. Darilek with his 14th-place finish of 20:02 and L. Jackson with his 15th-place finish of 20:04. C. Bran also finished the race as he took 23rd with his time of 21:43.

Leading the Wildcats was S. Ewing with his fifth-place time of 18:53. J. Aguilar took 12th with his time of 19:40 followed by John Aguilar who took 13th with his time of 10:45. Aaron Wilson placed 27 with his time of 22:37 and J. Martinez rounded it out with his 35th-place finish at 24:51.

On junior varsity, the Lady Wildcats sent multiple athletes, but not enough to fill a team.

Taking third in the race was A. Ford with her time of 14:48. The other Lady Cat runner was A. Garza who placed 19th overall with her time of 16:29.

The Waelder boys' team had enough for a team as they took third behind Rice and Industrial.

Leading the way was Tracy Moore who took 10th with his time of 13:13. T. Schilhah took 18th overall with his time of 14:26. Right behind was A. Reyna who finished 19th with his time of 14:49. B. Martinez and J. Nino rounded out the scoring, with Martinez taking 22nd with his 15:38 finish and Nino taking 24th with his 17:38 finish.

In junior high, the Lady Cardinals dominated the race, taking first as a team as well as having six racers take the top 10 spots.

First overall was R. Wagner to finished with a time of 13:09. J. Davis took third with her time of 13:38. M. Grabarkievtz placed sixth with her time of 14:08. P. Bran, A. Pesek and S. Mikes placed eighth, ninth and 10th respectively with the times of 14:25, 13:26 and 14:30. C. Tuch took 12th with her time of 14:30.

Shiner St. Paul and Waelder also had junior high boys compete, though the Cardinals were the only one with a full squad as they took fourth as a team.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was N. Boedeker who placed 10th overall with his time of 12:19. F. Benes took 12th with his time of 12:32. S. Benes and B. Prove took 31st and 32nd with their time of 13:27 and 13:28, respectively. J. Spann rounded out the scoring for the team with this 60th-place time of 15:09. Other named runners for St. Paul include P. Brown who finished the race at 15:35 and J. Brown at 16:13.

For Waelder, M. Morales took 14th with his time of 12:47. He was the lone Wildcat during the race.
