SHINER — The district season begins tonight (September 25, 2015) for Shiner St. Paul
(4-0) and the Cardinals are ready to repeat their 6-0 district record from last season.

Tonight they take on Schertz John Paul II (3-1), a team that’s averaged 35.5 points per game.

"They run the ball an awful lot," St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said, "they don’t really
throw it. They’ve been in their system [for a bit since the] coach has been in there four years.
Every year they’ve become more comfortable."

The Guardians are based out of a wing-T, an offense that the Cardinals have seen in scrimmages
(like their game against Nixon-Smiley) and other games.

"[We] just have to make the kids aware," Wachsmuth said of the wing-T.

Last week, the Cardinals gained many first downs but the score didn’t really indicate the success
  on the field.

"We had a couple situations where we drove the ball," Wachsmuth explained. There were times where
after long drives, which is the style of offense the Cardinals want to play, either a penalty would back them up or Flatonia’s defense would stop them from getting into the end zone.

Nonetheless, the Cardinals have been improving on both ends, including on defense where Wachsmuth
has noted that they’ve been "doing some good things."

"Every once in a while we’d give up a play here or there but for the most part we’ve held them in
  check," Wachsmuth said.

To get their first district win of the season, the Cardinals will need to eliminate the bad plays,
such as making sure they keep their already low turnover rate to a minimum as well as limit the
  mental breakdowns.

Shiner St. Paul hopes to do that tonight as they host Schertz John Paul II, with kickoff set at 7:30 p.m.
