Cardinals' track teams win state championships

WACO — After a weekend ( May 9 & 10, 2015 ) spent at Baylor University, many athletes on both the boys’ and girls’ side of the Shiner St. Paul track and field teams can declare themselves state champions. And after all 17 events were scored, the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals were named top teams, with the ladies scoring 102 points, besting Desoto Canterbury who scored 95 and the boys who scored 100.5 points, beating Muenster Sacred Heart who scored 99.5 points.

Two athletes on the boys’ team were named state champions for St. Paul.

Derek Kapavik took home gold at the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 16.29 seconds. Kapavik beat teammate Samuel Wenske, the silver medalist, who finished with a time of 16.37 seconds.

Kapavik also took home second in the 300-meter hurdles with his time of 42.69 seconds. Muenster Sacred Heart’s Aaron Davis took first in the race, beating him by a mere .04 seconds with his time clocked in at 42.65 seconds.

Wenske took fifth in that race with his time of 44.70 seconds.

Thomas Bell was also named champion as he got a distance of 20 feet, 2 ¾ inches in the long jump.

Ryan Geiger placed fourth in the 800-meter run, with his time of 2 minutes, 7.89 seconds.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Jed Janecek, Ryan Bell, Tre'Zelle Perry and Thomas Bell finished in sixth with their time of 46.54 seconds. The competition was tight, as Muenster Sacred Heart took first at 45.24 seconds, Desoto Canterbury took second at 45.96, Denton Calvary Academy third at 46.23, Watauga Harvest Christian fourth at 46.43 and Austin Hill Country Christian fifth at 46.51.

However, the 4x200-meter relay team of Janecek, Geiger, Marco Ynclan and Thomas Bell came home with a bronze with their finish clocked in at 1 minute, 37.43 seconds.

Their best finish at the relays came in the 4x400-meter where Kapavik, Austin Barton, Janecek and Geiger took home silver with their finish of 3 minutes, 38.88 seconds. Waco Live Oak Classical edged them out with their time of 3 minutes, 38.59 seconds.

In the high jump, Samuel Wenske grabbed yet another medal as he took home second with his jump of 5 feet, 8 inches. However, in the pole vault he took ninth of the nine state qualifiers with his distance of 9 feet. Teammate Jed Janecek tied for seventh with his jump of 9 feet, 6 inches.

Wenske then placed fourth in the triple jump with his distance of 41 feet, 3 ¼ inches. Ryan Bell placed ninth with his jump of 38 feet, 8 1/4. Inches.

In shot put, Colton Machart had a top-six finish, with his distance of 40 feet, 10 ¾ inches, good for fourth. Ynclan took eighth with his distance of 38 feet, 2 inches.

As for the ladies, Shiner St. Paul has many silver medalists and one state champion at the meet.

Emma Morgan took home gold at the pole vault with her height of 8 feet, 6 inches. Taking second was teammate Kaitlyn Kvinta with her height of 8 feet.

Long distance runner Natalie Jackson took home silver at the 1600-meter as she finished the race with a time of 5 minutes, 31.03 seconds. Waco Lie Oak’s Celia Holmes placed first with her time of 5 minutes, 24.07 seconds.

Jackson also took fifth in the 3200-meter run with her time of 13 minutes, 2.11 seconds. Holmes was also named state champion in that race.

Elise Patek grabbed a medal as well, placing third in the 100-meter hurdles. Patek finished the race with a time of 17.65 seconds.

She also took third in the long jump, with her distance of 15 feet, 3 inches. Irena Fikac placed sixth in the same competition with her jump of 15 feet, 1 ½ inches.

In the high jump, Jordan Pawelek took third, with her distance of 5 feet.

Parker Clay claimed bronze in the shot put event, with her toss at 32 feet, 10 ¼ inches. Clay took eighth in the discus toss with her throw of 83 feet, 10 inches.

In the same shot put event, Ashlyn Patek placed fourth with her toss at 32 feet, 3 ¾ inches.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Cassidy Thomas, Natalie Jackson, Elise Patek and Elyssa Wagner finished in second with their time of 4 minutes, 24.53 seconds.

The 4x200-meter relay team of Alexis Cantu, Emma Hull, Elise Patek and Elyssa Wagner took fifth with their time of 1 minute, 53.40 seconds while the 4x100-meter relay team of Cantu, Hull, Fikac and Wagner finished in sixth with their time of 54.47 seconds.

Alexis Cantu took eighth in the 200-meter with her time at 29.24 seconds.

Cassidy Thomas placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with her time of 51.77 seconds.
