Shiner St. Paul vs Cedar Hill Trinity Christian

The Cardinals have made quite a run at state championships the last several years, St. Paul has won state championships in 2010 and 2012, and were runner ups in 2011.

And have the chance to add another one at 7:35 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) at Bastrop Memorial Stadium, located in Cedar Creek.

"The kids have said from day one their goal is to win a state championship," St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. "The seniors experienced it as freshmen and are part of that winning tradition. Trinity Christian knows what it is like as they are the defending champions. Both teams will be excited and ready to play."

Trinity Christian is a spread team that lines up in the shotgun in doubles and trips, and line up with two-back formations when they run the football.

"They are not fancy; they just are good at what they do," Wachsmuth said.

Quarterback Malachi Broadnax has completed 122-of-229 passes for 2,164 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

The Tigers' leading rusher is Reggie Hicks who has 125 carries for 1,125 yards and 11 touchdowns. Broadnax has run for 691 yards and 11 touchdowns while Isaiah Davis has ran for 588 yards and 10 scores.

Top receivers are Marvin White (34-739, 10 touchdowns) and Trenton Chambers (29-425, 6 touchdowns).

"We have to stop them from making big plays," he said. "We gave up a couple of big plays the other night against Beaumont Legacy Christian. When they took a lot of snaps, we were able to stop them."

On defense, the Tigers could line up in a five-man front or switch to the 4-3 Dylan Riley leads the Trinity Christian defense with 115 tackles; Tavione Carter had six interceptions on the year.

Wachsmuth said the St. Paul offense must continue to protect the ball and hold onto for long periods of time as they have been doing.
