Shiner St. Paul faced off against rival Sacred Heart Friday night, and the game did not disappoint fans of the storied rivalry. Sacred Heart received the opening kickoff and their offense found some early success, but they ultimately turned the ball over on downs to the Cardinals on the 24.

Shiner responded as poorly as a team can, fumbling and turning the ball over to their opponent on their first play. Sacred Heart took control on the 26, and they scored a few plays later on a 9-yd run by Dylan Jahn. After a successful extra point attempt, the score was set at 0-7 with 1:06 left in the first quarter.

St. Paul and Sacred Heart traded punts after the initial score, but the Indians found a bit of success after trading possessions. Their offense put together a solid drive, and after wearing out the Cardinal defense, they scored on a 1-yard touchdown. They would miss the extra point, however, and take a 0-13 lead with 1:31 left until the half.

St. Paul completely dominated on their next offensive possession, getting a little bit of help from Indian penalties. Sacred Heart kicked the ball off out of bounds, meaning the Cardinal offense got to start on the 35. They earned a big chunk of yardage on a pass from Austin Barton to Ryan Gieger, and the Indians helped them out with a personal foul to set them up on the 13. A few plays later, T.J. Bell scored from 6 yards out, and after a successful pass attempt on the two-point conversion, the score was set at 8-13. It remained that way at the half.

The Cardinals began the second half with a punt, and their defense forced the Indians to do the same. However, they managed to block Sacred Heart’s attempt, which they recovered on the 25. They scored the next play on an impressive run by Bell, and after a good kick attempt Shiner lead 14-13 with 7:34 left to play in the third.

The change in momentum was undeniable, and the Cardinal defense matched their offensive production by forcing a turnover when Marco Ynclan intercepted Hunter Janak’s pass at the 28. The very next play, Shiner picked up where it left off on a huge play from Bell, this time a 72-yard touchdown run. They would add the extra point at take a 21-13 lead with 4:58 left in the third.

Shiner’s defense was not done making plays. After a solid kick and superb coverage, Sacred Heart found themselves pinned on their own 10. They had little success moving the ball and faced in a third-and-long situation. Janak was picked off again by Ynclan, who returned the ball to the 26, but a penalty had the Cardinals start their drive at the 36. They wasted no time punching it in as Bell scored on another fantastic run from 36 yards out. The PAT was good, setting the score at 28-13 with 4:32 remaining in the quarter.

The Indians showed some fight, as Brock Sitka returned the ensuing kick to Shiner’s 35. Their offense could do little, however, and the Cardinals ended up recovering a fumbled handoff on the 23. Shiner could do nothing with the ball and had to punt it away. Sacred Heart had to do the same, and after that Shiner’s offense was able to drive the ball and score on an 8-yard run by Bell. After a successful kick attempt, Shiner led 35-13 with 6:13 remaining in the game.

Sacred Heart responded rather well on offense, as they drove down into Shiner territory, but ultimately could not capitalize and turned the ball over on downs to the Cardinals on the 48. Shiner’s offense struggled and went 3-and-out, and their ensuing punt went out of the end zone for a touchback. The Indians took over on the 20, but they went nowhere. Janak was intercepted yet again, this time by Jed Janecek, who returned it for another Shiner touchdown. Sacred Heard blocked the PAT, leaving the score at 41-13 with 3:00 remaining.

Sacred Heart’s offense drove the ball a bit, but ended up punting it away to the Cardinals, whose offense needed one play to bleed the clock and end the game.

After the game, St. Paul coach Jake Wachsmuth commended Sacred Heart on their strong start: "They came out the first half and really put it to us; they did whatever they wanted to on offense and stopped us on defense. But, they weren’t up by much at the half, and the realized they could turn it around." When asked about importance of the turnovers his defense forced, he said: "Everything was built off the defense; we started executing on offense once they were able to give us the ball with such good field position." Wachsmuth added how proud he was of his team: "We stuck with what we’re good at, tried to mix some stuff in, but ultimately we played our game. As a coach, you hate to see your team start that way, but you love to see them finish like they did."

St. Paul has a bye next week, and Sacred Heart travels to San Antonio to face St. Gerard.
