Last year the Shiner St. Paul Cardinals did something they haven't done since a day before the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, beat Hallettsville Sacred Heart.

If St. Paul wants to repeat as TAPPS Division IV, District 3 champions it will likely have to get past the Indians again in a contest that has turned into a de facto district championship game in recent years.

A 15-minute drive separates the two campuses and for the two communities that have seen the schools play for district and state titles in multiple sports over the years it is extremely appropriate that the district once again come down to that game.

"It's a rivalry, but it's also going to decide who wins the district. We want to win championships and they want to win championships and it's really a fun game to be a part of," said St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth.

Sacred Heart head coach Pat Henke said what makes the series special is the respect players from both schools show towards one another.

"It's no surprise St. Paul and us are picked one and two," Henke said. "These kids get along and once the game is over with they'll talk and it's just great competition between two great schools,"

The last three Indians-Cardinals contest have been decided by a total of 11 points.

The win over their rival capped an undefeated district championship season and the Cardinals used that momentum to make it to the TAPPS regional playoffs.

The Cardinals return seven offensive starters including all-state offensive lineman Dustin Adamek and sophomore running back Adam Hollenbach who rushed for 1,771 yards and 28 TDs as a freshman. Wachsmuth said Hollenbach should meet the increased expectations in 2010.

"One thing about Adam is he's a hard working kid and he's good kid I think he'll be fine," Wachsmuth said. . .

With only four returning defensive starters from last years state regional playoff team, Indians linebacker Colby Mikes will be looked upon to provide leadership and a spark after a season where he had 12 sacks and 84 tackles.

"Colby's going to be our leader on defense, Colby's just an experienced real good football player," Henke said.

Bryan Brazos Christian and Austin St. Dominic Savio are two unknown teams that look to shake up the district. Recently Brazos Christian has played Sacred Heart close and St. Dominic is new to the district so the other teams aren't familiar with them.

"We had one heck of a game with them and their program is getting better every year," said Henke about Brazos Christian.

"We don't know anything about them and that's kind of scary," said Wachsmuth about St. Dominic Savio.
