St. Paul girls claim TAPPS state track title

WACO -- The St. Paul girls’ track team carted off the Class 2A title Saturday in the finals of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools state track meet.

"This is the first time in school history that St. Paul has won a state championship in track," St. Paul athletic director Dana Beal said. "We took seven girls to compete and each athlete that participated contributed to the title. Had they not done their job it would not have been possible for them to achieve this huge accomplishment. We are extremely proud of these girls!"

The seven-member St. Paul team compiled 77 points to best runner-up Victoria Faith Academy, which had 70 points.

The St. Paul boys’ team also had a strong showing, placing fifth with 32 points.

The Lady Cardinals got their first points in the meet in the 3,200-meter event as Samantha Siegel placed seventh with a time of 13:53.83.

The 4x100 relay team of Kymberlie Malatek, Alexa Schaefer, Madison Kurtz and emily wagner smoked to a first-place finish with a time of 52.06. The same foursome, running in a different order, also claimed the title in the 4x200 relay with a 1:51.54 time.

Two St. Paul runners claimed finishes in the 1,600-meter event. kali Kocian was second in a time of 6:00.01, while Siegel ran fifth at 6:09.28.

The 4x400 relay brought home the winning margin with a second-place finish as the quartet of Wagner, Kocian, Schaefer and Kurtz toured the oval in a 4:22.46 time.

In the field events, Paige Wener finished second in the discus with a best of 88 feet, 5 1/4 inches. She also took fifth in the shot put wth a 30-8 1/2 effort. Wagner, meanwhile, finished sixth in the long jump with a best of 16-0 1/4.

In the boys’ competition, the Cardinals scored with Tyler Blanton taking second in the high jump with a best effort of 6 feet, 2 inches, while Dylan Barton claimed second in the triple jump with a leap of 40-8.

St. Paul also claimed two fourth-place relay finishes. The team of Brandon Sciba, Barton, Adam Hollenbach and Blue Hybner took fourth in the 4x100 relay in a time of 46.51, and also claimed fourth in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:38.42.

It has been an extremely successful year for St. Paul athletics. The Cardinal football team won the state championship, while the volleyball team finished as state runner-up. St. Paul athletes have also claimed state honors or post-season berths in cross country, tennis, basketball and both St. Paul’s softball and baseball teams are currently in the playoffs.
